A sonic triangle of electrified polyrhythms, spaced-out synth jams and off-kilter beats. Formed of keyboardist Dan Nicholls (Squarepusher and Matthew Herbert), drummer Joshua Blackmore (Troyka) and guitar and synth man Matt Calvert (Three Trapped Tigers, Heritage Orchestra), Strobes create a sound that eschews genre and feels free from time-stamps. Intensely high-octane, the group fire off frantic tempos and intricate complexities, yet somehow manage to retain accessibility through fluid grooves and an engaging sense of melodic intuition. Conjuring big beats and a vast array of sonic possibilities, Strobes flicker effortlessly between the worlds of electro-improv, minimalist polyrhythm, Afrocentric grooves and distinctively original hooks. Built from collective composition, studio production, live sampling and improv jams, the music ranges from fiery, exhilarating odd-tempo loops, to polyphonic synth soundscapes and beats that make loose clothing shimmer and earrings rattle.

Mining influence from jazz, hardcore punk and contemporary classical music, Robocobra Quartet sound like little else. As an expanding, contracting and ever-changing collective, the group began performing live in 2014. Since then, their no holds barred approach -- centred on a howling drummer-vocalist and offset by menacing saxophones -- has garnered the group a reputation as a must-see live act, and a participant on our first Emerging Artist Programme.
